The Benefits of Chiropractic for Your Children

So what are the benefits of chiropractic for your children? As Chiropractors we often see infants who suddenly start crying and won’t stop no matter how much the care giver tries (this is commonly known as colic and essentially the baby is in pain). There could be so many reasons, beyond the usual tummy aches or constipation. To look deeper into the cause, it’s well worth consulting a Chiropractor in Crawley for an examination.

The central nervous system comprises of the brain and the spinal cord from where all the nerves for every organ and tissue emerge. Any kind of dysfunction in the vertebral column may result in various disorders relating to any body system. Symptoms experienced could be ear infection, sleep problems, reflux, constipation, colic, bed wetting etc...

It’s important to state that Chiropractic is not a cure for these conditions. We all have within us, an innate ability to heal ourselves. Chiropractic simply removes the nerve disturbance in the body which then allows the body to start to heal itself.

Why Is It Important For Children to Visit a Chiropractor

Since every function depends upon the nervous system, the spine should be well looked after. While being in Utero, the baby’s movements are quite irregular and disturbed. Sometimes these movements could misalign the vertebral column - or the birth in itself could be a traumatic process for the child. In both cases, there might be a need for an adjustment by a Chiropractor. Any misalignment, if left untreated, could cause inflammation and become a bigger problem in later years. So even if your child appears to be fine, it’s a good idea to have a Chiropractor check them over to help prevent future problems.

Kids love getting adjusted and they take a keen interest in Chiropractic! Below is a photo of *Eva adjusting Dr Danny with a toy activator - we may have a future Chiropractor in the making! Eva looks forward to her regular Chiropractic check-ups to make sure she grows up strong and healthy!

How Chiropractic Adjustments Benefit Children

The nervous system is the master control system. When there is a restricted movement in the spinal bones (or they are stressed due to an improper posture), the nerves linked from the spinal cord to the brain are choked or pressed. This is called Subluxation.

Subluxation could create problems with any organ and / or system in the body. Common subluxations in babies and children relate to the digestive system. Many children struggle with digestion during their infant years. Chiropractic adjustments re-align the spine, taking the pressure off the nerves which allows your child’s body to begin to heal itself.

It is therefore essential for your child’s health and smooth growth to consult with a Chiropractor and have regular chiropractic check-ups. Chiropractic care is extremely beneficial for children’s health. Ideally Chiropractic care should be used as a prevention of problems rather than a cure for existing issues!

Here's Eva's younger sister *Hanna also adjusting Dr Danny with the toy activator - I think we may have another future Chiropractor in the making here! ;) Like Eva, Hanna also really looks forward to her regular Chiropractic check-ups to make sure she grows up strong and healthy!

Head Fixation

Many parents complain about their infant’s head fixation problem. They would explain that the child won’t turn his or her head from the right or left (depending upon the case), no matter how many times they try. The child would sleep on the same side and would look in the same direction.

Although the parents may not consider it a big problem, chiropractic can evaluate and adjust the movements of the child. With the help of a Chiropractor, the child can enjoy a full range of neck and head movements.

In fact Chiropractors often suggest that an infant is taken in for an examination within two weeks after the birth, to check there are no problems resulting from the birth process. Spinal adjustments will help the child in sitting, crawling, standing and walking.

Bed wetting

Bed wetting is not only a hassle for the parents, it is also a disruption in the child’s social activity. The bed wetting may be as a result of nerve disturbance in the lower back which can cause bladder problems, so Chiropractic may help with that.

Colds, Ear Infections

If your child has regular ear, nose or throat infections then their immune system cannot be functioning at 100%! Also if he / she gets colds often, it is crucial to find the actual cause, so as to avoid long term health issues. The nervous system controls the immune system, so having Chiropractic adjustments can help strengthen the immune system, which in turn can result in less infections and illnesses.

Sleep Problems

If your infant or toddler is having trouble sleeping or his sleep patterns are irregular, Chiropractic can help in discovering the cause of the problem and dealing with it in the most effective therapeutic manner.

Other Problems

Chiropractic can often assist with various other problems such as:

Physical development delays

Digestive problems

Spinal problems (problems in sitting, crawling etc)

Headaches without any apparent cause

Smart Phone Syndrome (SPS) - What is it and Do You Have it?

Smart Phone Syndrome

Smart Phone Syndrome results from slouching over your phone for hours on end and it is causing  neck damage and straining your back muscles. "Text Neck" is a phrase that a few Doctors of Chiropractic are starting to use more and more to describe the excessive stress on neck muscles. According to a study of young adults in the U.K., 84% of those tracked experienced back pain during the last year, mainly due to being hunched over smartphones, tablets, and computers.

Text Neck - Chiropractor crawley

According to Crawley Chiropractic Centre, improving your posture can relieve lower back pain, and limiting your phone use can alleviate neck strain. While it seems awkward, try to hold your phone directly out and in front of your face, not on your lap where you might need to look down for minutes at a time. Billions of people now walk around hunched over their smartphones and this presents lots of risks e.g car accidents, exposure to radiation from the phones, walking into things and of course Smart Phone Syndrome (SPS) or Text Neck!

Text Neck - Crawley Chiropractic Centre

Statistics show that the average person spends between 2-4 hours a day with their head tilted down looking at their smart phones and this amounts to 700-1400 hours per year which is actually nearly 2 months per year (58.33 days to be exact!!!). This is insane when you break it down in this way don't you think? This doesn't even include the additional countless hours that many billions of people spend slouching on a couch playing computer games on the xboxes and playstations etc...

The youngsters of today will already have damage to the spine and soft tissues due of these chronic poor postural habits which will obviously become bigger problems as they get older. Kids and young adults need Chiropractic care to help counteract the damaging effects of Smart Phone Syndrome. Why is SPS so damaging for the spine you may ask?

Imagine Your Head Weighing as Much as Several Bowling Balls!

bowling balls - smart phone syndrome

Your head weighs about 10-12 pounds (approx weight of 1 light bowling ball) when its in the correct position - which is the neutral position with you ears over your shoulders. However if your head is bent forwards and down then the forces on the neck multiply dramatically. Research by spinal surgeon Kenneth Hansraj demonstrated the different levels of weight that forward bending of the neck causes on the spine:

Degree's of Forward Bend:

  • 15 Degree's = 27lbs
  • 30 Degree's = 40lbs
  • 45 Degree's = 49lbs
  • 60 Degree's = 60lbs

A fairly heavy bowling ball is 15lbs. So imagine, just by bending your neck forwards by 45 Degree's whilst texting or checking facebook, the weight of you of your head becomes the weight of 4 heavy bowling balls - 60lbs! I'm sure you can see that this is now a a major problem in modern society! Smart Phone Syndrome can result in loss of the natural curve in the cervical spine (neck) which will cause early spinal arthritis (wear and tear), disc injuries and many different symptoms including headaches, neck, shoulder and arm pain to name a few!

Tips to Prevent Smart Phone Syndrome

  • When you text, raise your mobile up to ear level rather than hunching over
  • Take Regular Technology breaks from your smart phones and tablets
  • Call us to Book an Appointment so you can have your spine checked
  • Do neck stretches and neck strengthening exercises (so you do not make the problem worse, only do neck stretches and strengthening exercises after you have had your spine checked by a Chiropractor)

If you know anybody who spends a long time texting, playing games on smart phones or tablets, do share this article with them as they quite possibly have Smart Phone Syndrome.

National Alcohol Awareness Week

It’s National Alcohol Awareness Week, organised by Alcohol Concern. At Crawley Chiropractic Centre we support this initiative.

It’s a chance to look at your drinking habits, what alcohol you drink and whether you could cut down on your alcohol intake.

Alcohol Awareness Week - Chiropractor in Crawley

It can be hard to know how much you should or shouldn’t be drinking each week. Every day there seems to be a survey or study that shows certain alcoholic drinks are good for you, others terrible then another survey or study contradicts it.

As Chiropractors in Crawley, we regularly offer Health workshops at where we cover how to eat, move and think to create optimal health in your life. Optimum nutrition, mindset and exercise are 3 core pillars of health that are covered.

There is one rock solid fact with regard to alcohol intake, your daily allowance. 2-3 units per day for women and 3-4 daily for men. Anymore is detrimental to your health.

But how much is a unit? Just one pint of 4% beer is 2.3 units. A small glass of white wine is also 2.3 units, so you can see how your daily allowance shoots up fast.

Alcohol Awareness - Crawley Chiropractic Centre

Stroke, High Blood Pressure, Heart failure can all be attributed to excess drinking of alcohol.

If a man drinks five units each day then, on average, he doubles his risk of developing liver disease and raised blood pressure

Women increase their risk of breast cancer by 20% by drinking just a little over the guideline amounts

But there are some simple ways to help your wallet and your health.

You can set a limit on how much you’re going to drink, cut back a little each day, cut down the alcohol by swapping strong beers or wines for ones with a lower strength and one of the biggest ways is to stay hydrated. Use water to quench your thirst rather than alcohol.

The positive effects are instant:

You’ll feel better in the morning, less tired in the day time, your skin will look better, you’ll start to feel fitter, you will lose weight too.

Alcohol Awareness Week - Crawley Chiropractic Centre

Over time, there’s a strong link between heavy drinking and depression and anxiety so even cutting down slowly could help. Sleep, behaviour, your heart and immune system – all these will improve by making some small changes in your drinking behaviour.

There is alot of help if you’re willing to make a change.

Childhood Obesity - Who is to Blame?

Childhood Obesity is a topic you’ve probably heard talked about many times over the past few years and it will continue to be a hot topic until something drastically changes! Who is to blame for this epidemic of obese kids? The parents? The government? The kids themselves? This is a really interesting topic which I’m going to discuss in this post.

There are several reasons for writing this post, some of which are linked to the work I do as a Chiropractor in Crawley and the other reason is because of what I witnessed whilst on holiday in Cyprus recently… I was relaxing by the pool enjoying some quality rest and relaxation and I started to notice a common trend in an awful lot of the holiday makers, both in the kids and the parents… Obesity!

Crawley Chiropractors

After a while this really started to wind me up! I was looking at the kids thinking “this is criminal!” Kids will generally eat whats put in front of them… How are there so many kids that are not just overweight but morbidly obese? In at least 95% of the cases I witnessed the parents were also obese as well… That’s were education starts to be a factor which I will touch upon later.

These kids were very young e.g. 3-5 year old boys and girls and many of them where easily 2 stone overweight and had “beer bellies” and “man boobs” – it was very sad to see what is happening all around us in the UK and the rest of the world.

I’ve been hearing for almost a decade now from other Health Experts, that this generation of kids growing up today are going to be the first generation that are outlived by their parents if things keep moving in the same direction they are going today! I’d believed this statement to an extent in the past but now I fully buy into it. It upsets me to say but Kids: Unless something changes soon, many of you WILL die before your parents!

Chiropractor in Crawley

Unless eating habits change dramatically very soon, then this obesity epidemic will continue to spiral out of control.

When I was growing up, in my primary school there was only thin or lean children with the exceptional of one obese kid and when I speak to people of the age of say 20 upwards they also recall that in their school there was also very few or no obese kids at all.

I remember back to my packed lunches all through my school days (particularly in junior school), how I was often very jealous that my friends would have cookies, crisps and biscuits at break time everyday and I would only ever have an apple or banana at break time and sandwiches on brown bread for lunch!

My brothers and I often thought we were deprived because we didn’t have the chocolate and biscuits at lunch breaks!  Looking back, I’m so glad that I was brought up with much healthier meals than many of my friends!  What happens when you’re a child will shape who you become as an adult so I would suspect my upbringing contributed to if not lead to me doing the work I do today as a Chiropractor and Peak Performance Expert. Thank you mum and dad!

So when it comes down to it, kids need role models and they happen to be the parents in most cases… If the parents eat very unhealthy food that makes them fat then the same thing will ultimately happen to the kids… Of course food isn’t the only thing that contributes to poor health, if you’ve been following me for any length of time you’ll know I always say “eat well, move well and think well and you will be truly healthy!”

Right now we are talking about the eating well part of the health equation although of course exercise and mindset are also big factors that merit their own articles – watch this space! So I believe the parents are responsible for feeding the children nutritious food (or not as the case maybe!) and then the book really does stop with them. If their kids are unhealthy and overweight  due to the lifestyle they have learned from their parents, then there is something fundamentally wrong.

Crawley Chiropractor

Earlier on I talked about part of the problem being a lack of education. It’s not necessarily that people need formal health and nutrition training, they just need expert guidance to help them make the right choices. Let me ask you a question, where did you learn about health and nutrition? Most people learn about health from the media: newspapers, magazines, TV and surfing the internet! There’s so much incorrect conflicting information out there that many people unknowingly make poor health choices thinking that they are being healthy! Can you relate to that?

Although I do believe parents are ultimately responsible if their kids are obese, I do appreciate that it is a minefield out there trying to be healthy. There is so much bad information out there which I’m sure confuses many parents. With that said obesity in kids and adults is completely preventable by simple lifestyle changes. But to be fair ‘you don’t know what you don’t know!’ Kids won’t get good nutritional education from school or from the government or anything like that…

So parents, it’s time  to step up and learn more about making lifestyle changes in yourself and your kids so that you kids will outlive you rather than the other way round!

If you would like some more information on making some simple life saving health choices then be sure to contact me on the contact form and I’d be happy to help.
