New Service at Crawley Chiropractic Centre - Sports Massage - Therapeutic Massage

We're delighted to announce that we now have an in house Sports and Therapeutic Massage Therapist at Crawley Chiropractic Centre. Sue Perry has joined the team and I'm sure you will join me in making her feel welcome. I've known Sue for many years now and she is very good, I've had many massages from her over the years and I highly recommend her.

Many years ago before I was a Chiropractor, I was training to be an Osteopath. As part of the Osteopathic training I became a Sports Massage Therapist so I know a good practitioner when I see one, hence the reason why Sue Perry is now working at Crawley Chiropractic Centre!

As well as getting a Chiropractic Adjustment every week, I also get a Sports Massage every week to keep me in the best condition so I can look after my patients. Sports Massage compliments Chiropractic care very well and we are advocates of both disciplines. Below is some more information on how massage can help you:

5 Benefits of Massage

1: Massage reduces waste products such as lactic acid & carbonic acid that can build up in muscles after activity. this lactic acid can cause cramping, discomfort, and irritability. It also enhances the immune system and aids recovery from soft tissue injuries by increasing blood circulation to injured areas.

2: Massage dilates or opens up blood vessels, improving the circulation and relieving congestion. Massage also can increases the number of red blood cells. This increase can be very helpful for many reasons.

3: Massage acts as a “mechanical cleanser” pushing along the lymph and hastening the elimination of wastes & toxic debris. Massage has also been shown to help eliminate edema of the extremities through lymphatic massage.

4: Massage increases the blood supply and nutrition to the muscles without increasing the amount of lactic acid produced through voluntary muscle contraction (which takes place during exercise). Massage therefore helps to overcome harmful “fatigue” resulting from strenuous exercise or injury.

5. Massage can also aid digestion as well.

So there's lots of benefits to combining Chiropractic and massage, they really do compliment each other very well.

If you've got really tight muscles and need a Sports Massage or you just fancy treating yourself to a nice relaxing therapeutic massage, give us a call to book your massage with Sue Perry today.

Chiropractor in Crawley - Can Chiropractic Help Babies?

Can Chiropractic Help Babies?

At Crawley Chiropractic Centre we adjust lots of babies and small children and we thought you would like to read this article for more information on the subject. Enjoy!

When Christine Anthony’s chiropractor clinic learned that she had a daughter, they wanted her to bring her in to be checked. Anthony, an Evanston, Ill., resident, wanted to believe that the clinic was good intentioned and not just trying to get business since they seemed on the level. She resisted a while, but eventually gave in.

Her daughter’s X-rays came back showing a slight curve in her spine – Anthony could actually see it. The clinic’s recommendation was that her daughter get adjustments once a week. “I don’t know how realistic and beneficial chiropractic care is for babies, toddlers and kids,” Anthony says. “Is it better to wait until they are full grown or is there really good evidence out there that early chiropractic care can really help kids be healthier?”

The Stats

Based on an American Chiropractic Association Report, there were an estimated 20 million pediatric visits in the 1980s. In 1998, there were an estimated 30 million pediatric visits annually. Last year, utilizing these estimates and based on a study by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), Dr. Joel Alcantara, ICPA research director, estimated approximately 68 million pediatric visits annually. Since this was derived from a study done by ICPA members, there is some bias, admits Jeanne Ohm, ICPA executive coordinator, because they know their members see a greater amount of children annually than the average chiropractor.

Still, these results clearly show that it is common for children to receive chiropractic care. Furthermore, this care is safe. The ICPA presented preliminary results of their Practiced Based Research Network, listing three improvements with care noted by both doctors and parents involved in the survey:

Improved sleep
Attitudes and behavior
Immune system function
Starting Early
“Starting care at the beginning of pregnancy is the best way to assure an optimal growth environment with optimal neurological supply and nutritional exchange,” says Dr. Gregg Stern, a national board certified diplomate at Chiropractic Pediatric Maternity & Family Wellness Care in Buffalo Grove, Ill. In other words, there’s no such thing as being too young.

Dr. Stern says an immediate nervous system exam after birth or within the first few days is optimal, as labor and delivery can be traumatic, even more so when interventions are used and even more with a Cesarean section. He has a schedule of periodic checkups that correlate with the child’s development and changes in the spinal development:

Stage I: Within 48 hours of the birth process
Stage II: 2-month exam – child is lifting head up
Stage III: 6-month exam – child is sitting on his/her own
Stage IV: 8-month exam – child is crawling
Stage V: 11-month exam – child is starting to walk

The Benefits
Says Dr. Stern, The nerve system is the master control system of the body- (please see our video on what is chiropractic) ,  and a well-functioning one combined with good lifestyle habits can handle stressors. But for most people their nerve system becomes overwhelmed, causing subluxation, dysfunction in the spinal joints causing pressure onto the nerves and interfering with proper information flow along the nerves.

“Kids not only have their own stressors, but they also experience the stressors in the home and the poor lifestyle habits of the parents,” Dr. Stern says. “When a child starts getting adjusted, their nerve system gets cleared of the interference and starts to function properly again, passing the appropriate messages for proper immune responses, healing, growth and development, mental acuity, physical performance…”

“I can tell you, in my expert opinion, that every single child that has entered my office with asthma, ear infections, eczema, digestive problems, bed wetting, sleep problems, among many others, has seen a tremendous response to chiropractic care,” says Dr. Marc Gottlieb, a chiropractor in San Diego, Calif. “It is simple neurology.”

Addressing the issue of ear infections, every child that Dr. Gottlieb has checked with ear infections has had Vertebral Subluxation Complex in the upper part of their neck – this is when one or more vertebrae shift out of their normal position due to physical, chemical or emotional stress and pressure is created on the corresponding nerve root.

Depending on where the nerve is in their spinal column, it creates a disturbance to the central nervous system and the corresponding cells, tissues and organs that nerve innervates. By adjusting the upper cervical spine in children, it allows proper flow of the lymph system and muscles relax, allowing the fluid to drain normally, stopping the infections.

“Another huge benefit to receiving care early in life is that their spinal condition has not been there as long as an adult, thus allowing children to respond much faster to care,” Dr. Gottlieb says.

In the case of Anthony’s daughter, it would make sense to fix the curve early on, because like a tree growing crookedly, “It is much easier to ‘retrain’ its growth as a sapling rather than waiting until it becomes larger and more firmly set in its deviation” says Dr. Jeanne Ohm, a chiropractor in Philadelphia, Pa.

Shellie Ver Meer of Laguna Hills, Calif., used chiropractic care early on in her sons’ lives. If either of her sons had a fever, she would take them right to the chiropractor. “I could absolutely time it,” she says. “Within 20 minutes of their adjustment, usually the time it took to drive home, their fever would be gone. After we got back home, I retook their temperature, and it was gone. They got over their colds and flu in at least half the time as normal, and ridding them of their fever was the beginning to healthier boys.”

The Risks
Minor aches and pains can be experienced at first when lactic acid is released and as the old dysfunctional body patterns start to change into more functional patterns, Dr. Stern says.

“The amount of force used to adjust an infant and child is nothing compared to that used on an adult,” Dr. Ohm says. “For infants, picture the amount of pressure it would take to touch a ripe tomato before it would go through the skin of the tomato. Very often, infants will peacefully sleep through their adjustments.”

Dr. Gerry Clum, president of Life Chiropractic College West in Hayward, Calif., and spokesperson for the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, says his favorite method of adjusting a child is to have Mom lie on an adjusting table on her back and place her baby or small child on her chest.

The child is happy and comfortable, and Mom has a direct sense and awareness of the amount of force that is being applied to the child’s spine. “It [is] a win-win-win situation!” he says.

Dan Thompson has had his 9 1/2-month-old son adjusted since birth – not because he had subluxations or curvature in his neck or spine – but rather as an agent for healthy growth and development. At this point, the Bradford, N.H., resident is planning to continue Caleb’s chiropractic care throughout his childhood, though it will eventually be his decision on whether or not to continue.

“Chiropractic care seems to be a widely misunderstood practice,” Thompson says. “It’s a matter of putting the pieces together (no pun intended).”

Chiropractic care involves no drugs nor surgery, and a broad range of techniques are used to locate, analyse and gently correct vertebral misalignments also known as Subluxations, caused by a variety of everyday activities. Chiropractic care is a natural method of healing that stimulates the body’s communication system to work more effectively to initiate, control and coordinate the various functions of the cells, organs and systems of the body, benefiting your overall health. Chiropractic is so much more than simply a means of relieving pain.

Chiropractors help to restore and maintain alignment and function of the spine through Chiropractic adjustments. Ultimately, the goal of Chiropractic is to restore the body to its natural state of peak health and performance by having a clear brain-body connection, rather like an electric circuit. When the spine is properly aligned, overall health is boosted in a number of ways.

Giving Dad the gift of an alignment will allow him to operate and fire on all cylinders! Contact Dr danny Scahill DC of Crawley Chiropractic Centre on  01293-511265 for more information about Your Fathers Day Special Offer!

Gardening Hints and Tips to save you from Pain - Crawley Chiropractic Centre

Tips to avoid back strain while working in the garden. Now that we’ve been having some nice weather in Crawley, more and more Chiropractic patients are coming in with back strains and they often say “I pulled a muscle in my back doing the gardening!” Gardening is a hobby that is enjoyed by a great many people and studies have shown that working in a garden for just a few minutes a day, has proven to reduce stress significantly.

However, lots of people are forced to give up gardening, as they grow older because they start to have trouble moving, getting up and down, carrying tools etc... Should our twilight years strip of us of one of your favourite hobbies? I say no way! Did you know that Chiropractic can help you keep moving and help you to keep on gardening if that’s one of your passions? Many of our patients are keen gardeners and they report that Chiropractic care has helped them to return to their favourite hobby!

Back-related problems are the number one reason that people give for avoiding garden work, which is perfectly understandable. Many people suffer from back problems as they grow older and gardening can be painful if not done correctly. Using the right tools and a few simple shortcuts can make a huge difference to gardeners, young and old alike. Taking your time and also planning ahead can help restore gardening to the fun activity that it once was.

Planning ahead is the trick to smart gardening. Getting out in the garden only to discover that you’ve left an important tool behind can be very frustrating. If you’re using small hand-held tools, try putting the ones that you’ll need into a bucket so that they’re easier to carry. If working with larger tools, try putting them in a wheel barrow rather than carrying them, which enables you to simply roll your tools out to the garden with you.

Before you even begin gardening, try doing a few simple stretches. Remember that gardening is a form of exercise and that those short minutes spent stretching will help to avoid painful pulled muscles in the days and weeks that follow. Furthermore, when you begin your gardening, remember to treat it as exercise and vary the different tasks that you do, so you aren’t performing the same repetitive motion, over and over. This will help to avoid sore or stiff muscles, the following day.

If you are working from a standing position, try and use tools with long handles, so you don’t have to hunch over. Additionally, you will want to ensure that you maintain good posture while you’re working. Stand with your feet spread slightly, which provides more stability for your body, and keep your back straight. When shovelling, raking or using a hoe, keep your motions slow and smooth; avoid jerking or making any short, choppy movements.

Remember to lift with your legs and not our back, but you should also remember that, when you bend, you should bend from the hips and not the waist. Be careful not to twist as you turn – this can lead to painful back injuries. If you need to do something that would require you to twist, take the extra time to reposition your feet and stabilize yourself, rather than twisting and risking injury.

Spinal Awareness Week: 11th-15th May 2015 - Crawley Chiropractic Centre

The UK's huge cost of 'ignoring' the health benefits of chiropractic care

With most of the baby boomer generation either retired or very near retirement, the UK population is ageing rapidly. This ageing population would put increased pressure on NHS resources and Chiropractic care could help reduce that burden. It's likely you have relatives who are of retirement age, so we would like to make you aware of Spinal Awareness Week: 11th-15th May 2015.

The United Chiropractic Association (UCA) has hit out at the "blinkered" governmental attitudes towards chiropractic care, which means research showing it drastically reduces hospitalisation rates and nursing home admissions has been ignored for almost two decades.

With coronary heart disease (CHD) the biggest killer in the UK and dietary advice on prevention recently discredited, the UCA says the government should look at all possible ways to tackle heart disease and other conditions that affect people as they grow older.

The UCA, which has around 500 members across the UK with tens of thousands of clients, points to research carried out in the US by the RAND Corporation in 1996. The study looked at 414 people over the age of 75, some 23 (just under 6%) of whom reported receiving chiropractic care. The analysis of the 414 - taken randomly from an insurance database - found some startling but consistent results.

Those receiving chiropractic care were less likely to be using a nursing home, more free from hospitalisations for the previous 23 years and more likely to be mobile in the community. They were also less likely to use costly prescription drugs.

The report concluded: "Although it is impossible to clearly establish causality, it is clear that continuing chiropractic care is among the attributes of the cohort of patients experiencing substantially fewer costly healthcare interventions."

And it recommended: "Results suggest a need to develop chiropractic models that address the special preventive and rehabilitative needs of the older patient."

There have been similar findings in studies in other countries, including Canada and New Zealand.

With an increasing older population the UCA says it's time the government took off its blinkers. "Successive governments have been very selective in the research they listen to and act on," said UCA executive member Estelle Zauner-Maughan.

"If you keep on doing the same things you can't expect the results to change. We know the huge cost of hospitalisation, nursing care and prescription drugs, quite apart from the impact of illnesses on people's lives. And we know from a number of studies around the world that chiropractic care reduces the need for all of those things.

"One study in an area of Canada actually recommended that everyone had access to chiropractic care." (1993 Manga Report, Ontario, Canada).

CHD is responsible for around 73,000 deaths in the UK each year. About 1 in 6 men and 1 in 10 women die from CHD. In the UK, there are an estimated 2.3 million people living with the condition.

For decades, UK families were advised to cut the risk of heart disease by reducing intake of fatty foods such as dairy produce and some meats. The research which led to that guidance was recently attacked as "flawed" and we are now being told there is no link between these foods and heart disease. Scientists are now telling people to avoid the low fat foods which were previously said to be healthier - because they are actually packed with sugar. In the meantime, obesity rates - linked to heart disease - have shot up in the UK.

Ms Zauner-Maughan explained that chiropractic care helps by keeping the central nervous system in good order so that the brain can 'talk to' the rest of the body: "People under regular chiropractic care don't have to work so hard to stand upright. They have greater balance and mobility. This means they remain active for longer which has many health benefits, including maintaining a healthy heart and a healthy weight."

She added: "Governments have been quite happy to give the go ahead to advice which is actually bad for people and is based on flawed research. The problem is that the sort of long-term, clinical research that the government requires is very costly and only the large pharmaceutical companies can afford it.

"But that's no excuse for wearing blinkers and ignoring the studies that have been carried out."
